SSC JE 2026 Explained: Job Profile, Salary, Eligibility, Syllabus & More

Introduction

If you have a diploma or degree in engineering and are looking for a Central Government job, you may have already come across SSC JE. But knowing the name of the exam is not enough. A common question among students is: What does a Junior Engineer actually do after getting selected? Is the job mostly office work or field work? Which departments recruit JEs? What is the salary? And who can apply for SSC JE 2026?

The SSC Junior Engineer Examination 2026 is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission to recruit Junior Engineers for various government departments and organisations. In this article, we will understand the exam, job role, salary, eligibility, exam pattern, syllabus, selection process and application process in simple language.

What is SSC JE?

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Junior Engineer Examination to recruit technical candidates for different Central Government departments and organisations.

The Junior Engineer posts are generally Group B posts and carry Pay Level 6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission.

The pay scale mentioned for these posts is:

₹35,400 – ₹1,12,400

The actual amount received by an employee every month will depend on the basic pay, allowances, deductions and place of posting.

The 2026 recruitment has 1,748 tentative vacancies. This number is not necessarily the final number because SSC can update vacancy details later.

The main technical areas include:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical & Mechanical Engineering
  • Telecom-related posts, depending on the organisation and prescribed qualification

The examination also includes Scientific Assistant recruitment in IMD, which has its own eligibility requirements. Therefore, candidates should not assume that the eligibility rules for Scientific Assistant are the same as those for Junior Engineer posts.

What is the SSC JE Job?

A Junior Engineer is a field-level technical officer. You work under senior engineers and help them get the work done correctly.

In daily life, a JE may have to:

  • visit a work site
  • check whether the work matches the drawing
  • take or verify measurements
  • inspect materials or machines
  • keep simple records
  • help write or check reports
  • assist during inspection

Is it office work or field work? It can be both. Some days are spent in the office with files, drawings and registers. Many days are spent on site. The mix depends on the department and the posting.

Civil JE: buildings, roads, water works, drainage, repairs and site measurement.

Electrical JE: wiring, panels, motors, power supply and electrical maintenance.

Mechanical JE: machines, pumps, workshops, generators and mechanical maintenance.

Telecom JE and Scientific Assistant posts are different. Telecom work is linked to telecommunication systems. Scientific Assistant work in IMD is scientific and technical support work, not normal building-site supervision.

One extra point: Junior Engineer posts in the Border Roads Organisation are only for male candidates. BRO also has physical and medical standards. Read that part of the notice before choosing BRO.

Candidates should always check the latest notice on the official SSC website because the Commission can issue updates or addenda.

SSC JE 2026 Vacancies

The official notice gives 1,748 tentative vacancies.

These posts are spread across several organisations, such as Border Roads Organisation, CPWD, Central Water Commission, Military Engineer Services, Farakka Barrage Project, DGQA-Naval, NTRO, Lighthouses and Lightships, Department of Telecommunications, IMD, Brahmaputra Board, Central Water and Power Research Station, and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.

Post-wise and category-wise numbers are published separately on the SSC website under Tentative Vacancy. SSC does not collect state-wise vacancy lists. The final number can change, so treat 1,748 as a working figure, not a locked figure.

SSC JE 2026 Salary

SSC JE posts are in Pay Level 6, with a pay scale of ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400.

But students should understand one important point.

₹35,400 is the basic pay, not necessarily the amount that you receive in your bank account every month.

Government employees may receive different allowances according to the applicable rules and place of posting. At the same time, deductions such as pension-related contributions and other applicable deductions are made.

So, the actual in-hand salary can be different from the basic pay.

This is why it is better not to judge the job only by looking at the starting basic pay.

SSC JE 2026 Eligibility

Eligibility is one area where students need to be careful.

There is no single qualification that applies to every SSC JE post.

The required qualification depends on the post and organisation.

Generally, eligible candidates may need a relevant engineering degree or a three-year diploma in the required engineering discipline. Some posts also require relevant work experience.

SSC CHSL Notification 2026
SSC CHSL Notification 2026 Out for 2536 Posts: Apply Online, Eligibility, Dates, Syllabus

For example, certain posts can have additional experience requirements along with the engineering diploma.

This means a candidate should not simply think:

“I have a diploma, so I can apply for every SSC JE post.”

That is not correct.

You need to check the qualification mentioned against the particular post you want to apply for.

Age Limit

The age limit also depends on the post and organisation.

For some posts, the upper age limit is 30 years, while certain posts have an upper age limit of 32 years. Age is calculated according to the date mentioned in the official notification, and applicable relaxation is provided to eligible categories according to government rules.

Therefore, always check the exact age requirement for your preferred post instead of assuming that the same age limit applies to every JE post.

Nationality

Most applicants should be Indian citizens. Subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, and some persons of Indian origin from specified countries, can apply only if they meet the notice conditions.

SSC JE 2026 Exam Pattern

The examination consists of two papers.

Paper-I

Paper-I is a Computer Based Examination.

SubjectQuestionsMarks
General Intelligence & Reasoning5050
General Awareness5050
General Engineering100100
Total200200

The duration is 2 hours for most candidates.

Paper-I is now an important change to understand because it is treated as a qualifying paper, rather than directly contributing to the final merit in the same way as Paper-II.

There is also negative marking in Paper-I.

Paper-II

Paper-II is also a Computer Based Examination and focuses on the candidate’s technical subject.

SubjectQuestionsMarks
General Engineering100300

The duration is 2 hours for most candidates.

Paper-II carries much more weight in the final merit process. Candidates therefore should not prepare for Paper-I and Paper-II as if they have exactly the same purpose.

The examination rules, qualifying requirements and negative marking should always be checked from the latest SSC notice before the examination.

SSC JE Selection Process

The official path is simple:

Paper-I → Paper-II → Merit and post allocation → Document Verification → Appointment

Paper-I only shortlists you. Paper-II decides rank. After merit, the user department checks original certificates. For BRO posts, physical efficiency and medical tests also apply. If a candidate fails BRO standards after allocation, SSC may not give another post.

SSC has also mentioned a sliding method used in recent JE exams to fill unused vacancies. Details of that method are in earlier SSC notices. Candidates who reach that stage should read those notices on the official website.

How to Prepare for SSC JE 2026

A simple preparation plan can work very well.

Step 1: Start with the official syllabus

Do not begin by randomly studying books and videos.

First, download the syllabus and understand what you actually need to study.

Step 2: Strengthen your basics

If your engineering fundamentals are weak, start there.

Do not worry if you cannot solve difficult questions immediately. First understand the basic formula, concept and method.

Step 3: Make a formula notebook

For technical subjects, maintain a small notebook for important formulas, shortcuts and common mistakes.

Revise it regularly.

Step 4: Solve previous-year questions

Previous-year questions are extremely useful because they help you understand the type and level of questions asked in the examination.

Do not simply check the answer.

Try to understand why the answer is correct.

Step 5: Practice numericals

Reading technical theory is not enough.

Solve questions regularly, especially from your weaker subjects.

Step 6: Do regular mock tests

Mock tests help you improve:

  • Speed
  • Accuracy
  • Time management
  • Question selection

After every mock test, spend time checking your mistakes.

A mock test is useful only when you learn from it.

Four to six focused hours a day is more useful than an unrealistic 15-hour timetable.

Is SSC JE a Good Job?

It is a good option for many engineering students. It is not perfect for everyone.

Students like it because it is a central government technical job, the pay level is Level-6, the work uses engineering knowledge, allowances follow government rules, and there is scope for growth inside the department.

Remember the other side too. Many posts involve field work. Posting can be anywhere under that organisation. Transfers can happen. BRO work is physically demanding. The department you get may not be the one you first wanted.

If you want stable technical government work, SSC JE is worth preparing for. If you want only a quiet city desk job, read the department list before you apply.

Final Words

SSC JE 2026 is not just an engineering exam. It is an opportunity to use your technical knowledge in a Central Government job. But before applying, make sure you understand the post, qualification, age limit and job requirements properly.

If you are eligible, my advice is simple: do not wait for the last date to apply. Try to complete your application a few days early. On the last day, many candidates may try to access the website at the same time, which can make the server slow or cause problems while opening the application portal or submitting the form. I have personally faced a situation where the portal was not opening properly, so it is better not to take that risk.

Once your application is done, focus on preparation. Understand the syllabus, revise your engineering basics, practise previous-year questions and keep working on the topics where you make mistakes.

Also, keep checking the official Staff Selection Commission website for any new notice, addendum, vacancy update or change in dates. Recruitment details can be updated after the main notification.

Apply early, prepare regularly, and keep checking the official updates. A little planning now can save you from unnecessary stress later.

All the best for your SSC JE 2026 preparation!
